Early intervention is crucial to achievement of the best outcomes for children with
autism spectrum disorders (ASD). While
VIA is limited in its capacity within the school program, we are committed to providing
support and services to as many families as we can during these critical first years. Based on this commitment, VIA has developed
several Early Intervention services to meet the varied needs of families of young
children with a diagnosis or at risk for a diagnosis of ASD.
Comprehensive Home Program
A comprehensive program includes extensive training for parents and home therapists,
program development and supervision, and ongoing consultation with parents. The home program begins with a two-month
start-up phase, which includes initial assessment using the revised version Assessment
of Basic Language and Learning Skills
ABLLS™-R,
training for
parents and home therapists at VIA and in the home, development of program goals
and objectives, and setup of materials and data notebook.
Once the start-up phase is complete, the ongoing program includes a monthly
visit by VIA staff into the home and a monthly visit by the child and parents/home
therapists to VIA’s clinic. VIA staff
will complete ongoing data analysis, program evaluation, materials preparation,
and program development. Parents also receive six flexible consultation hours per
quarter that may include assistance in IEP development, additional training, or
community-based assessments.
Home Consultation
For families seeking less intensive intervention, VIA offers consultation services
for the home or community settings.
The focus of the consultation would be for VIA staff to provide training and recommendations
to parents or caretakers. Possible
areas that may be addressed include, but are not limited to
toilet training support, use of reinforcement and motivation systems, teaching specific
early learning skills, use of naturalistic teaching techniques across environmentsand functional communication training.
Consultation services are billed at an hourly rate, with
a flat fee for a report with recommendations and follow-up by phone or e-mail.
ABLLS™-R
Assessment
VIA outreach staff will meet with children at their home and/or in VIA’s Early Intervention
Clinic to administer the
ABLLS™-R,
a comprehensive skills inventory that may be used to develop individualized goals
for a child’s home or school program.
The assessment includes a written report with suggested goals for the child.
