Shaping the Future Workshop

Shaping the Future is an intensive three-day workshop offered several times each year, and is designed to provide parents and professionals with training in the theory and application of ABA principles, specifically as they relate to children with autism. Topics covered include the principles of reinforcement, ABA-based teaching techniques, assessing the function of behavior, and data collection and analysis. The workshop includes lecture, hands-on activities, and student observation. A 20% discount in the workshop registration fee is offered to parents and home therapists. Click here to view the workshop flyer.  Click here to view the workshop Registration Form. Contact Jennifer Wooten at (434) 923-8252 or  jwooten@viaschool.org  with any questions.

School In-service Trainings

As you plan your staff development calendar for the upcoming school year, keep in mind that VIA can provide half, full or multi-day in-service trainings for school districts. The following topics represent half-day workshops; workshops listed as having two parts can be completed in a full day, split into two separate half-day sessions, or Part 1 can be completed on its own.  As always, VIA is also happy to customize workshops to meet your school's needs.

Custom Training

VIA will work with school districts or other professional agencies to customize group workshops and trainings on ABA or autism-related topics. These may be on- or off-site, and the group size, workshop length, and content can be tailored to fit the organization’s needs. These workshops will be priced individually. For more information or to develop a plan for a custom workshop, contact Peggy Halliday at (434) 923-8252 or phalliday@viaschool.org.

School Consultation

VIA currently provides classroom consultation to school districts for pre-school or school-aged students with autism. VIA can also provide consultation to teachers seeking to make classroom-wide changes. Consultation may focus on academic programming, behavioral issues, and/or social skills. VIA senior staff will complete observation in the classroom and prepare a report with recommendations. Consultation is provided based on staff availability. Click here for current consultation rates. For more information regarding school consultation, contact Peggy Halliday at (434) 923-8252 or phalliday@viaschool.org

Internships

VIA offers internships free of charge to undergraduate and graduate students interested in autism or autism-related fields. Because teaching internships require intensive training, VIA generally requires a minimum of 140 hours for internships. Interns are trained in basic theories of ABA as well as applied teaching methods used in VIA’s program. They observe and are trained to work with individual students. Internships are generally done through a university’s internship program, but may also be arranged independently.

Shorter internships are available to professionals seeking an intensive, hands-on experience with students with autism. The length and nature of these internships can be tailored to meet the needs of the professional interested. Fees for professional internships will be individualized based on the length of the internship and amount of VIA staff time required.

Students or professionals interested in internships should contact Rorie Hutter at (434) 923-8252 or rhutter@viaschool.org for more information or to schedule an interview.
